Should I consider sharing?

•  House or flat sharing can be a way to make private renting affordable. This can not only keep the rent down but also other bills like council tax, heating, water rates and telephone line rental.

•  You would usually have your own bedroom but share other facilities such as kitchen, bathroom and living room.

•  Before agreeing to share with anyone, you should consider how compatible your lifestyles are. For example, do you have different standards of cleanliness or are you likely to have very different times for going to bed.

•  Note that there are legal implications depending on whether you all sign one tenancy agreement, whether you each sign a separate tenancy agreement or whether you just move in with other tenants without signing any agreement. See The legal implications of sharing

•  If you are planning on moving in with someone you know who is a tenant, you should check whether that person has the permission of the landlord to share the premises.

•  One particular form of sharing is to rent a room from a resident landlord. In this case you might only have a licence rather than a tenancy. See The legal implications of sharing
