Their official name is Myrrh Education and Training and they are a charity operating in Brixton and Walworth in South London. They specialize in work-related courses including: carpentry; painting and decorating; childcare; health and social care; catering; hairdressing; motor vehicle; and IT They can be particularly useful as you can start on some of these courses at different times during the year — unlike many college courses where you often have to start in September Most of the learners are adults You can also often get help with the cost of travel which is not usually the case with a college For more information you can visit their website at myrrh.ac.uk Below we have selected four types of course which might be relevant to you Carpentry They run three Carpentry and Joinery courses – Foundation Craft Award (level one), Intermediate Craft Award (level two) and Advanced Construction Award (level 3) If you have substantial trade experience you may be able to start at level two Most students spend 9, 15 or 30 hours each week on their course These courses run from the centre at Brixton Hill Painting and Decorating There are two Painting and Decorating Courses — Foundation craft Award (level one) and Intermediate Craft Award (level two). If you have substantial trade experience you may be able to start at level two Most students spend 9, 15 or 30 hours each week on their course These courses run from the centre at Brixton Hill Childcare Courses Two courses prepare you for work in nurseries, schools and early years centres — Childrens care learning and development NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 You do not need any qualifications or previous experience to join the level two course although you will have an English test to make sure you have a sufficient standard of Engliush You will learn skills through a work placement You will usually spend two or three days a week on the course — either in the training centre or on work placement These courses are run from the Walworth Centre Health and Social Care These courses prepare you for work in the caring services, such as residential homes. Regulations require that all care workers have these qualifications. The courses offered are Health and Social Care NVQ levels 2 And 3 The level 2 course is for people new to care work or those with experience who need their skills recognised to meet legal requirements. You do not need qualifications or experience to join this course. You will learn skills through a work placement. You will usually spend two or three days a week on the course — either in the training centre or on work placement. These courses are run from the Walworth Centre. |
